Your Nervous System Deserves Care This Summer (And Every Season) (Copy)
Summer is often painted as the season of rest.
Long days.
Warm sunshine.
Vacation.
More time outside.
But if you're like many of the women I work with, summer doesn't always feel slower.
The calendar fills with family gatherings, travel plans, kids home from school, weddings, vacations, projects you've been putting off, and trying to make the most of the beautiful weather before it disappears.
Life may look different than it does in the winter, but your nervous system can still feel just as overwhelmed.
That's why I'd love to offer you one simple question to come back to throughout your day:
What does my nervous system need right now?
Not next month.
Not after the vacation.
Not when work settles down.
Not when everyone else is taken care of.
Right now.
We often overlook the small moments.
When most people think about self-care, they imagine needing an hour for meditation, a weekend retreat, or an expensive vacation.
While those things can absolutely be restorative, your nervous system doesn't require grand gestures to begin feeling supported.
In fact, it's often the smallest practices, repeated consistently, that create the greatest change over time.
You might pause for three slow breaths before opening your computer.
Notice that you're clenching your jaw and gently soften it.
Take your coffee outside instead of drinking it while answering emails.
Walk barefoot in the grass.
Stretch between meetings.
Look up at the trees instead of your phone.
Place a hand on your heart and simply acknowledge,
"I'm carrying a lot today."
These moments may seem insignificant.
They're not.
Each one teaches your nervous system that it doesn't have to stay on high alert all day, every day.
Breathwork is about much more than breathing.
When people hear the word breathwork, they often imagine intense breathing techniques or dramatic emotional releases.
Sometimes those experiences happen.
But the heart of conscious connected breathwork is much gentler than many people realize.
It's about learning to become present with yourself.
It's about noticing what your body has been trying to tell you.
It's about building trust between your mind, your body, and your nervous system.
Over time, many people begin noticing they respond differently to everyday stress.
They recover more quickly after difficult conversations.
They recognize tension sooner.
They feel more connected to themselves instead of constantly reacting to life around them.
The goal isn't to become someone different.
The goal is to create enough safety within yourself that the person you've always been has room to emerge.
Regulation doesn't mean you're always calm.
One of the biggest misconceptions about nervous system regulation is that regulated people never feel anxious, frustrated, overwhelmed, or sad.
That's simply not true.
A healthy nervous system is flexible.
It can experience stress, move through emotion, and eventually return to balance.
Regulation isn't about never being activated.
It's about knowing how to find your way back.
Again and again.
A gentle practice for today
Take one minute.
Pause.
Notice your breath without changing it.
Relax your shoulders.
Unclench your jaw.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Then ask yourself:
What does my nervous system need right now?
Listen before your mind answers.
Your body is often wiser than you think.
You don't have to do it alone.
Whether it's through breathwork, women's circles, retreats, or simply practicing these small moments of awareness throughout your day, healing isn't about perfection.
It's about creating enough safety, consistency, and compassion that your nervous system no longer has to carry everything by itself.
Every gentle breath.
Every pause.
Every moment you choose to listen instead of push through...
You're teaching your body something new.
And that matters more than you know.
